The Battle of the Beach Monkeys! It's a daily showdown that plays out on the hot, sun-drenched sands of Manuel Antonio, where the capuchins reign supreme and the tourists are their unwitting snack suppliers. With faces as innocent as cherubs and tactics worthy of a Navy SEAL unit, these furry masterminds have turned snack thievery into a full-time profession. You’ll spot one of them sauntering by, pretending to admire the ocean view, while his accomplice sneaks behind your beach towel like a little white-faced ninja. Before you can say “¡Ay, mono!”, your Pringles have vanished, your banana’s gone, and you’re left holding nothing but the memory of your lunch. Some tourists try to chase them, but those monkeys move like lightning—pausing just long enough to flash a cheeky grin from the treetops before popping open the stolen chips like they’ve earned them fair and square. Local legend even says there’s a monkey king who once pulled off the ultimate heist: a full picnic basket and a bottle of Fanta. Around Manuel Antonio, it’s not the tide you have to watch out for—it’s the tiny, adorable, snack-stealing commandos plotting their next delicious victory. Remember that friend of yours in grade school that you're mama didn't like you to hang around with? Well, multiply that times 1,000! They have been trained to not only steal your food, but to play with your head! My son was staying at a B&B in Manuel Antonio with his wife. . Early in the morning hours, he saw a monkey break the screen and darted straight to the kitchen counter and stole 3 bananas! Then, as he left, he stuck his tongue out at my son and laughed. Pura Vida!

Costa Rica is home to some of the BEST COFFEE in the world. The history of coffee here has made its mark in the culture. Johnny was a proud coffee connoisseur who had been living in Costa Rica for just over a year. One morning, while sipping his steaming cup of Tarrazú roast on his porch, he had a wild idea. “I’m tired of hearing Americans brag about their Dunkin’, Folgers, and Maxwell House,” he said to himself with a grin. “Let’s settle this once and for all!” So Johnny organized what he called the Great Coffee Showdown of the Century. He invited a group of his expat friends and a few curious locals, promising an afternoon of caffeine, laughter, and bragging rights.

On the big day, Johnny lined up the contenders—each in unmarked cups—and gave everyone scorecards. The aroma filled the air like a heavenly cloud of roasted bliss. Each participant took careful sips, nodding thoughtfully, pretending to be professional coffee judges. But after only two rounds, the truth was undeniable. Every single person, 100% of the time, chose the Costa Rican coffee. Even the most loyal Dunkin’ drinker tried to defend their pick but finally surrendered, muttering, “Okay, fine… this stuff is better.” Johnny raised his cup in triumph, shouting, “Pura Vida wins again!”

By the end of the tasting, everyone was so caffeinated they were practically levitating. The laughter echoed down the street as someone suggested Johnny should send a friendly letter to Folgers, starting with, “We love your commercials, but…” From that day forward, Johnny became known around town as “El Juez del Café”—The Coffee Judge. He still hosts tastings now and then, but these days, everyone knows how it’ll end: Costa Rican coffee always takes first place, and Johnny always has the biggest grin in the room.

With that said, if you've never been on a Costa Rica coffee plantation tour, you should book one as soon as you can! Not only will you spend quality time in nature, but you'll learn about the journey from bean in the ground to that first morning sip! Nothing better than a cup of JOE!
