The Dark Days are over for Sgt. Scotty. That's what they used to call him over in Afghanistan. He is still proud of his three deployments. Those years back in 2012, 2013 and 2014 were challenging. He had to make split-second decisions about life and death. He saw things done to human beings that you only see in horror movies. The memory lives within him. . and probably will forever. But now, because of Mother Nature and Costa Rica, the pain has been pushed aside. He focuses on good coffee, sunrises, the simplicity of life and an occasional butterfly fluttering by. His garden filled with tropical plants, fruits and veggies give him pleasure. He's still at his fighting weight. The cobwebs and grit inside and out are being flushed away. I had lunch with Sgt. Scotty two days ago. He and his wife, Erika are finally in the process of acquiring their Legal Residency here in Costa Rica. They know. . without a doubt, that Costa Rica will be where they live out their lives. Many of his Navy Seal brothers have come to visit him in the last two years since they moved here. Their 3.3 acres are perfect. This is all they need. He built a cozy little guest villa and he's been busy with veterans from all over the USA coming to visit him. He doesn't have a degree in Psychology but he knows that the 7-day getaway that he offers does a lot of good. He doesn't charge his war buddies for their stay. He feels pleasure and has a lot of pride that he helps so many broken souls gather within them the strength to move on with their lives. We need more people in this world like Sgt. Scotty and his wife, Erika. They're laying a foundation towards a new life for those who fought for us.

Toucans are among the most iconic birds of the tropics, instantly recognized by their vibrant bills and playful personalities. Costa Rica is home to several beautiful species, including the Keel-billed Toucan, known for its rainbow-colored beak; the Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, also called the Swainson’s Toucan, with its deep brown and yellow tones; and smaller species like the Collared Aracari, Fiery-billed Aracari, and Emerald Toucanet, each with its own unique charm. These birds thrive in forests, from lowland rainforests to misty cloud forests, and are often seen hopping through the canopy or calling out in their comical, croaking voices.

The toucan’s beak is one of nature’s most fascinating designs. Though it looks large and heavy, it’s actually lightweight and strong, made primarily of keratin—the same material found in human hair and fingernails. Beneath the colorful outer layer is a honeycomb-like structure of bone and air pockets that gives the beak strength without extra weight. This clever construction helps the toucan reach for fruit high in trees, defend itself, and even regulate its body temperature by radiating heat through its bill.

Beyond its practical uses, the toucan’s beak also plays a role in communication and attraction. During courtship, toucans often toss fruit to one another as part of their bonding rituals, and their vivid colors signal health and vitality.
